How to tell your windows are done
Windows fail slowly. By the time one is obviously bad, the rest are usually not far behind.
Drafts you can feel
Stand by the window on a cold night. If you feel air moving, the seal or the frame has given up.
Fog between the panes
That is a failed seal. The insulating gas is gone and the glass will not clear on its own.
Hard to open or lock
Frames that have warped or swollen. It is a safety problem as much as an annoyance.
Rot or soft wood at the sill
Water has been getting in around the frame. Left alone it moves into the wall.
Single pane glass
One layer of glass, no insulation. Most of the heat you pay for goes straight through it.
Condensation on the inside
Cold glass pulling moisture out of the room air, which over time feeds mold on the sill.
