Why Chain Link

Built for Strength and Security

Proven Durability

Steel framework and fabric built to handle Northwest rain, wind and heavy daily use.

Low Maintenance

No staining, no warping, no rot. A properly built chain link fence lasts 20 to 30 years or more.

Cost-Effective Security

The lowest starting cost of any fence we build, without giving up strength.

Pets and Kids

Keeps dogs and kids in and gives you a clear, see-through boundary.

Finishes

Galvanized, Black or Green

Standard chain link is zinc-coated (galvanized) steel, a silver finish with classic durability. Color-coated systems add a polyester and PVC coat over the zinc, which gives two layers of corrosion protection and a finish that blends into a yard far better than bare metal.

BlackModern and clean. Disappears against most homes and plantings.
GreenA natural outdoor look, good for gardens and wooded lots.
GalvanizedThe classic silver finish. The most budget-friendly option.
Options

Upgrades for Privacy and Strength

Privacy slatsSlats woven into the mesh turn chain link into a screen. They block roughly 70 to 90 percent of the view and come in black, green and brown. Manufacturer ratings run from about 75 percent for standard lock slats to 90 to 95 percent for winged and hedge-style slats.
Top railKeeps the fabric straight and stops sagging. The most important upgrade on long runs and slopes.
Bottom railStops dogs from pushing the mesh out at the base and stiffens the whole fence line.
Tension cablesCables along the top and bottom keep the fabric tight on a basic residential run.
Commercial-grade wireThicker-gauge fabric for businesses, heavy use and high-security runs.

Know the Rules

Heights and Permits

Common residential heights are 4, 5 and 6 feet, with taller runs for businesses and sports areas. Inside the City of Portland, chain link does not need a building permit until it passes 8 feet, but the 3 foot 6 inch cap on fences in the front setback still applies. Suburbs and Clark County set their own limits.

Our guide to Portland fence height and property line rules covers each city, and we check the rule for your address before anything is ordered. Weighing chain link against cedar? See wood vs chain link side by side, or our guide to making a chain link fence private.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about materials, pricing, or installation? Here are the answers homeowners ask us most.

Is chain link cheaper than wood?-
Generally, yes. Chain link has the lowest starting cost of any fence we build, which is why it is popular for dogs, big lots and property lines. If you are weighing both, we will quote each one.
How long does a chain link fence last?+
A properly installed chain link fence can last 20 to 30 years or more. Galvanized and color-coated systems add protection against rust and weather.
Can a chain link fence be made private?+
Yes. Privacy slats woven into the mesh block roughly 70 to 90 percent of the view, and they come in black, green and brown.
What heights are available?+
Common residential heights are 4, 5 and 6 feet. Taller runs are available for businesses and sports areas, depending on local rules.
Do I need a permit for a chain link fence in Portland?+
Inside the City of Portland, chain link does not need a building permit until it passes 8 feet. Zoning still caps fences at 3 feet 6 inches in the front setback. Other cities set their own limits, and we check yours before we build.
Do you install commercial chain link?+
Yes. Our commercial-grade system uses top and bottom rails, thick-gauge commercial wire, privacy slats and post caps, and carries a limited 5-year workmanship warranty.
