Our shop on NE Portal Way sits inside Gresham city limits, so an east county fence is a short drive for us, not a day trip. We are a local, family-owned exterior contractor, licensed, bonded and insured in Oregon (OR CCB: 198186).
The detail that trips people up out here is that Gresham, Troutdale and Fairview sit right next to each other and still do not share one fence code. A 7-foot back fence can be allowed in Troutdale and over the limit in Gresham, where most homes top out at 6 feet. We check which city your lot is in before we quote, and we build to that city’s numbers.

Fence Height Limits in Gresham, Troutdale & Fairview
These are the standard residential numbers each city publishes. Corner lots, driveways and a few special zones can lower them, which is covered below.

Gresham: the details that change the number
- Clear vision areas cap you at 3 feet. Where a driveway meets the street, the triangle measured 20 feet along the road and 20 feet back along the driveway is limited to 3 feet. At a street corner it runs 40 feet in each direction.
- Lattice counts. Anything attached to the fence, including lattice on top, is part of the overall height.
- Sloped lots get some room. Where the grade differs between two properties, the 6 feet is measured from the highest ground within 5 feet of the shared line.
- No vinyl or chain-link in the Design Districts. In the Downtown, Civic, Corridor and Rockwood Design Districts, vinyl and chain-link fencing are not permitted.
- No sheet materials, barbed wire or electric fencing on a home. Gresham does not allow fences made of tarps, sheet metal, chipboard, plywood or other sheet materials, and barbed and electric fences are prohibited on residential lots.
- One arbor is allowed out front. A single entry gateway, trellis or arbor can go in the front yard, up to 10 feet tall and 6 feet wide and deep.
Troutdale and Fairview
Troutdale does not require a permit for a residential fence up to 4 feet in the front yard and 7 feet in the side or back yard, and every fence still has to meet the city’s clear vision standards in Chapter 5 of the Troutdale Development Code. Fairview does not require a fence permit at all, and caps fences at 4 feet in the front yard and 6 feet in the side and rear yards. Fairview defines the front yard as the area between the front of the house and the front property line.
In all three cities
No permit does not mean no rules. The fence has to stay off the public right-of-way, clear of utility easements you do not control, and on your side of the property line. Call 811 before any post hole is dug so underground lines get marked. If the line itself is in doubt, a licensed surveyor settles it before the posts go in, not after.
