Fence Installation in Hillsboro, OR
Fence installation in Hillsboro, OR works differently from Beaverton or Tigard: the city wants its own fence permit before a new fence goes up. We file it, build to the city's height and sight-line review, and set posts for the wet valley ground from Orenco Station to Reed's Crossing.
- City of Hillsboro fence permit handled for you
- Grade 1 cedar, vinyl, chain-link, Colorbond steel
- Oregon-licensed (OR CCB 198186)
Do You Need a Permit for a Fence in Hillsboro?
Yes, inside city limits. The City of Hillsboro lists a Fence Permit for "requesting a permit to construct a new fence or to change an existing fence within City limits," filed through its Development & Permit Center. That is separate from the state building code, which does not require a building permit for a wood, wire-mesh or chain-link fence under 7 feet. Gorilla Works prepares and files the city fence permit as part of the job, so the height and placement are approved before a post goes in.
What the City Checks Before You Build
The fence permit is a planning review, not a structural one. The city looks at two things: how tall the fence is in each part of the yard, under the fence standards in section 12.50.250 of the Community Development Code, and whether it blocks a driver's view where a driveway or street meets another, under the vision-clearance rules in 12.50.260. Front-yard sections get a lower limit than side and back yards. Applications go in through the city's online Permitting Portal.
- South Hillsboro is its own district. Reed's Crossing, Rosedale Parks and Butternut Creek sit inside the South Hillsboro plan district, roughly 1,400 acres planned for about 8,000 homes, which carries its own fence standards. We check the district rule, and your HOA's, before we draw the layout.
- Not every Hillsboro address is in the city. Reedville and Aloha are unincorporated Washington County. A fence there follows the county's code and, where a permit is needed, goes through Washington County Building Services at 155 N First Ave, downtown Hillsboro.
- Historic properties. Homes on Hillsboro's Cultural Resource Inventory, protected under code section 12.27.300, can need historic review for exterior changes. Ask us to check before you pick a style.
And in every case: call 811 before digging, stay on your side of the line, and keep out of the public right-of-way. Not sure where the line is? Read fence property line rules and who owns the fence.
64 Freezing Nights a Year at the Airport
NOAA's 1991-2020 normals at Portland-Hillsboro Airport record about 64 nights a year at or below freezing, roughly 22 more than Beaverton, along with 35.93 inches of rain. A post that sits in wet soil and then freezes gets pushed and pulled every cold snap, which is how fences start to lean after a few winters.
The ground makes it harder. Quatama loam, a soil the USDA first described right here in Washington County, carries a high water table from January through March, and the Aloha silt loam found along the south side of the Tualatin Valley holds water one to two feet down. The wettest ground in town sits around Jackson Bottom Wetlands, 635 acres of Tualatin River floodplain a mile south of downtown.
Our answer is in the post hole: gravel at the base so water drains out, concrete crowned above grade so it sheds rain away from the wood, and the option of PostMaster steel posts, pre-galvanized G90 steel with a Lifetime Limited Warranty from Master Halco, wrapped in cedar so the fence still reads as wood.
Four Ways to Fence a Hillsboro Yard
Standard cedar build
Grade 1 cedar boards, pressure-treated posts, stainless fasteners and a kickboard, backed by a 3-year written workmanship warranty.
Premium cedar build
Clear cedar, the cleanest board grade, on PostMaster steel posts, backed by a 5-year written workmanship warranty.
Vinyl and chain-link
Vinyl for a fence you never stain; chain-link for dog runs, side yards and long back lines where you want it to last and stay open.
Colorbond steel
Steel panels in finishes like Woodland Grey, Jasper and Monument, with a 10-year materials warranty on the panels.
Compare them in detail: wood, vinyl, chain-link and steel. Every planning article is in the Portland fencing guide.
How a Hillsboro Fence Job Runs
- Measure and check the address. City, county or South Hillsboro district, plus any HOA rule.
- Written quote, naming the board grade, post type, heights and warranty.
- City fence permit. We prepare the layout and file it through the Permitting Portal.
- Tear-out and haul-away of any old fence, then posts, rails, boards and kickboard.
- Walkthrough with you before we leave.
Every install crew is led by an installer with 5+ years of experience. What changes the price: the length of the run, the material and board grade, height, wood or steel posts, and how much old fence comes out. Real Portland-area numbers are in the fence cost guide.

Gorilla Works did an amazing job with my new privacy fence. It turned out even better than I hoped for. Because the fence is so beautiful, I’m going to need to quit neglecting my yard and bring it up the beauty and quality of the fence. Highly recommend them. Pricing was really good, and they were very even able to start and get done in a shorter timeframe than anticipated.
