The Portland & Vancouver Fence Guide
Everything a Portland or Vancouver homeowner needs before building a fence, in one place: what it costs, which material holds up in our wet climate, who owns the line, what each city allows, and how to keep a fence standing for twenty years. We pulled these answers together from the fences our own crews build every week across the metro, and every article links back here.

Start Here: How to Use This Guide
A fence is a bigger decision than most homeowners expect. The style is the easy part. The parts that actually decide whether you are happy in five years are the ones nobody shows you at the store: the posts under the ground, the property line the fence sits on, the city rule that caps its height, and how the wood is finished for a climate that rains more than a hundred days a year.
This guide groups our fence articles by the real order a project happens in: budget first, then material, then the rules and the property line, then care once it is up. If you already know you are ready to build, our fence installation page lays out how we work, and you can ask for a free written quote any time. Building on the Washington side? Start with our Vancouver, WA fence page. In East County, see the Gresham fence page.
One thing worth saying up front, because it is the single most common mistake we fix: on an older Portland fence the posts almost always fail before the boards do. Our standard build sets Grade 1 cedar on pressure-treated posts with stainless fasteners, and our top build sets PostMaster steel posts, pre-galvanized G90 steel, then wraps them in cedar so the fence still reads as all wood. That one choice is why a fence lasts fifteen years instead of eight.
What a Fence Costs
Set a realistic budget before you fall in love with a style. These two break down real Portland price ranges by material and by the foot.
