What Is a Hog Wire Fence?
A hog wire fence (also written hogwire, and sometimes called a wire panel or stock panel fence) is a wood frame with a welded steel wire panel set inside it. The wire does the containing. The cedar frame does the looking-good.
The name comes from agricultural stock panels, but the modern residential version is a different animal: cleaner welds, tighter frames, and cedar milled to look like furniture rather than farm equipment.
The reason people choose it over a solid privacy fence is simple. It defines a boundary without walling anything off. If you have a view worth keeping, a garden that needs light, or a small yard that a 6-foot solid fence would make feel like a box, hog wire solves the problem that privacy fencing creates.

Where a Hog Wire Fence Works Best
Front Yards
Defines the property line without hiding the house. Common on Portland bungalows and craftsman homes where a solid front fence would look wrong.

Where It Is the Wrong Choice
Worth saying plainly, because most pages on this topic will not.
You want privacy. Hog wire is see-through by design. If the point of the fence is to not see your neighbor, this is the wrong style. Look at board on board or a good neighbor fence instead.
You need to block wind or noise. Open wire does neither.
You have a climbing dog. The horizontal wire grid can give some dogs a foothold. Ask us about panel spacing and height before you commit.

On the cedar grade. Most fence companies build with Grade 2 builder-grade cedar, which has more knots and warps, twists, and cracks in our wet climate. We use at least Grade 1 on every install and do not charge extra for it. On a hog wire fence this matters more than usual, because the frame is thin and fully exposed. There is no picket run to hide a board that twists.
On the fasteners. Stainless steel, standard. Cheaper fasteners rust and bleed dark streaks down cedar within a year or two, which on a minimal frame is impossible to ignore.

Our wet season is hard on a fence like this in two specific ways.
Cedar frames on hog wire are slender by design, so wood movement shows more than it would on a solid fence. Grade 1 cedar, a top rail cap to shed water off the end grain, and correct fastening are what keep the frame straight and square through years of soaking and drying.
The other issue is where wood meets metal. Any fastener or panel edge that is not corrosion-resistant will streak the cedar in a climate this wet. That is why stainless is standard on our installs rather than an upsell.
